Here at Fairmont Farm, we're constantly striving to improve our practices for a healthier environment and more productive land. In 2024, we invested in a dragline manure application system. This allows us to efficiently supply manure – a valuable natural fertilizer – to approximately 40% of our acreage. This new system significantly reduces the need for heavy tanker trucks in our fields, minimizing soil compaction. Importantly, the manure is often applied through an injector, which helps preserve the nitrogen content, allowing us to reduce our reliance on commercially produced nitrogen fertilizer.

Furthermore, over the past 10-15 years, we've actively reduced our tillage through the implementation of no-till and reduced-till planting methods. This minimizes soil disturbance, helping to improve soil structure and health. To further enhance our soil health and retain valuable nutrients after corn harvest, we've implemented fall cover cropping on all our corn land. These cover crops act as a natural way to hold nutrients in the soil over the winter and improve overall soil health for the following growing season.
