Beyond the Harvest: The Unseen Work of Winterizing the Farm

As the final colors of autumn pass and the air gains that true, sharp chill, we enter a critical, high-intensity period here at Fairmont Farm. This is when the hard work of the entire season culminates and we lay the groundwork—literally—for a safe winter and a successful next spring.

Our Focus on No-Till

We were thrilled to finally finish the corn harvest, securing the necessary feed for our herd for the months ahead. But the work in the fields doesn’t end when the crops are harvested. In fact, that's when our long-term commitment to sustainability really kicks in.

Since 2008, we've successfully transitioned to a no-till cropping system, meaning we don't disturb the soil through traditional tillage. This practice is essential because it ensures crucial moisture retention, significantly reduces erosion, and greatly improves the overall health of the soil. We rely on natural allies, like worms, whose activity helps increase soil aeration and nutrient cycling—all leading to better water quality around the farm.

Immediately following the harvest, our team works to spread manure across the fields as a natural, nutrient-rich fertilizer. This window is incredibly brief and dictated entirely by the weather. We must take advantage of every clear day to spread the manure across the fields. This process is essential for our commitment to soil health and sustainability. Spreading it now ensures that the fields are properly nourished and ready to be covered by the winter snow and ice, preventing nutrient runoff and preparing the ground for the next cover crop cycle. We are also simultaneously planting a cover crop of rye and wheat. This cover crop provides nutrient retention, improves soil health, and helps with compaction reduction. These steps are challenging, long-hour work, but it’s a non-negotiable step in our annual cycle and our commitment to farming for future generations.

Cozying Up the Crew: Prepping Barns for Comfort

The other half of the winter prep happens right here at home: ensuring our animals stay comfortable, healthy, and protected when the inevitable deep freeze sets in. Our team has been meticulously cleaning and prepping every barn and shed. This involves checking heating and ventilation systems, ensuring water lines are protected from freezing, and bedding areas are dry and well-stocked. Our animals are strong and productive—and their health is paramount. Just like you turn on your furnace and insulate your windows, we are making sure their environment provides consistent comfort. A comfortable animal is a healthy animal, and that commitment to their welfare is what allows them to produce the quality milk and meat you enjoy.
